Review: ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 Eclipse GA401IU-HE001T

The Zephyrus G14 is the latest gaming laptop that ASUS is offering under its ROG gaming line. If we look at its specs, this is exactly the sort of gaming device that gamers have dreamt of for years. In addition to high-end components, you get to personalise your machine with the AniMe Matrix display, which is nothing but magic.

ASUS has armed this 14-inch laptop with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 GPU and the latest AMD Ryzen 9-4900HS CPU. Then there is a 16GB RAM that puts a lot of power into ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14. Its thin, lightweight design is another selling point that would make you fall in love with this dynamic gaming laptop.

ASUS has not released the ROG Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop in some regions. However, this product is still available on pre-order - If you order now, you can get a Free X-box Game Pass. In case you want to know more, we have reviewed the Zephyrus G14 Eclipse GA401IU-HE001T in detail.

This is one of the lightest, thinnest gaming machines that we have tested so far. All in all, getting your hands on the 14-inch ROG Zephyrus G14 is a treat as a gaming enthusiast. Let’s find out whether it can withstand tough gaming and long battle sessions.

Design

The ROG Zephyrus G14 features AMD’s recently introduced HS Design Standard. This is a unique design that combines portability with performance providing a perfectly balanced gaming laptop. This design standard aims at manufacturing innovative devices with discrete graphics that are light and remarkably thin. And the Zephyrus G14 features the same built and in fact a poster-child debut model.

ROG Zephyrus G14 has a design that is more business-focused with hardware that is perfect for hardcore gaming. This gaming laptop is compact in size, weighs around 3.52 lbs (1.6 kg) and features a novel lid design. It comes with an eye-catching ErgoLift hinge that lifts the keyword up when you tilt it. Moreover, the hinge allows more space for fans underneath for better airflow.

At first glance, the Zephyrus G14 looks noticeably gaming-functional than business-impressive. The big keycaps, angled vents on the sides and AniMe Matrix display make it more fun for gaming. You can display any gif, text, or image on the lid, thanks to those small LEDs that are immersed in its half diagonal lid display.

Display

We reviewed the 14-inch G14 Eclipse GA401IU-HE001T that offers an FHD display with a 1080p screen resolution. This specific model offers a refresh rate of 120Hz which we think would be awesome with a higher resolution panel. However, ASUS has covered this by pairing NVIDIA GPU with AMD’s FreeSync, thanks to recent updates from Nvidia.

The blending of AMD FreeSync with NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1660 lets you enjoy judder-free gaming. You get to experience buttery smooth, tear-free display and get to admire superb visuals. Its screen is Pantone Validated, which simply means that it's far better than its factory calibrated version.

We played Arkham Origins to test the display and graphics of Zephyrus G14. We were pleased to see the bright neon signs while we were wandering through the dark alleys of Gotham City. The shadowy environments were never too dark or washed-out, while the neon signs were glowing with vivid greens and reds colours.

Webcam

The biggest drawback of ROG Zephyrus G14 is that it lacks a built-in webcam. Although ASUS sells an optional webcam that you can set on top of your screen, it’s not of high quality. Even if you don’t use the webcam regularly, this is a component that you would like to have on your laptop.

Keyboard

The ErgoLift hinge raised the keyboard forward providing a better angle for typing. The Zephyrus G14 is the first laptop in the ROG line to introduce a power button that features fingerprint login. The keyboard has a desktop-inspired layout with dedicated hotkeys, which make you feel right at home. ASUS has put the ROG Armoury Crate software, microphone mute and volume buttons within easy reach.

For a faster response, the over-stroke technology activates higher in each keystroke. It offers a solid 1.7mm key travel and those chicklet keys feel good to type on. This is a decent keyboard at this price, but we would recommend you get an external keyboard for gaming. You might not find this keyboard much responsive for gaming.

Connectivity

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 features two Type-A USB ports and two Type-C USB ports of which one can be used to work as DisplayPort and Power Delivery port. In addition, there is an audio jack port and an HDMI 2.0b port. Also, it features Bluetooth 5.0 and Intel Wi-Fi 6 for networking connectivity.

Performance

The ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401IU-HE001T is amongst some of the most powerful gaming laptops in its class. ASUS has equipped the G14 gaming laptop with AMD’s latest Ryzen 7 CPU that runs on the Windows 10 Home OS. This is an eight-core (16 logical) processor that delivers a basic clock speed of 2.9GHz with a maximum turbo speed of 4.2GHz.

The G14 gaming laptop packs serious muscle and makes a formidable media-editing laptop. We run dozens of Chrome tabs simultaneously and it did not even kick the fans to cool down. It performs well in general performance tests and scored 30,181 points in the Geekbanch 4.3 test. This is an above-average performance for a laptop with a 14-inch display.

Gaming Performance

ASUS has paired a massive 16GB RAM with 512GB SSD storage to ensure smooth performance. NVIDIA’s Max-Q graphics chip (RTX 2060) fits well with this duo to provide a solid gaming experience. The display also takes advantage of this combo ensuring a better refresh rate, elimination potential stuttering.

We tested its performance for different games and the Zephyrus G14 came up on top. While running at Ultra settings, it notched 87 frames per second (fps). In the Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the G14 cranked out 49 fps when we run it in the benchmark mode. However, it blew away the competition in Grand Theft Auto V with a surprising 115 frames per second.

Battery Life

ASUS claims that the Zephyrus G14 can deliver up to 10 hours of battery life. That’s true as we were able to extract 10.7 hours of battery life during video streaming test. However, that was when we put its discrete GPU to sleep in the Silent mode. But this greatly affects the display and dim it too much.

The screen provides lower contrast in the Silent mode as compared to the higher-powered mode. On the contrary, we received around 6.5 hours of battery life in the default Performance mode.

Pros:

Great display and audio
Superb battery life
Great performance for gaming

Cons:

Backlight keyboard
Lacks webcam

Verdict

The Zephyrus G14 is arguably the smallest gaming laptop that you can get in the market. It boasts the best specs as a business laptop and offers the longest battery life as a gaming machine. Other than the absence of a webcam, it is a perfect laptop in the 14-inch class.
